Riding the crest

A GREATER SHEARWATER making a running take-off along the crest of a wave in the Bay of Fundy to the south of Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick (Canada).

These remarkable seabirds are visiting us from the southern hemisphere during the austral winter (our summer) to take advantage of the abundance of food present at this time of the year in the Bay of Fundy. These shearwaters will remain with us for most of the summer before eventually making their way across the Atlantic, down the west coast of Africa and then back to their main nesting islands at Tristan da Cunha.
